Native breeds do the business at millennium bash

By Robert Davies

WELSH Blacks, two brothers showing different breeds, and a couple who run a small- holding were the stars of the millennium Royal Welsh Show.

After taking top honours at Stoneleigh, the principalitys native cattle scooped up all the beef interbreed championships. The breed champion, Martin and Rita Stewarts bull Mynydd William, shrugged off the challenge of 13 other champions to take the individual supreme award.

Then he joined up with Burke Trophy winning partner Mynydd Marigold to snatch the Fitzhugh beef interbreed pairs title. Earlier the duo had formed part of the team of five that pushed the Charolais quintet in to reserve in one of the most spectacular competitions at the show.

Semen from the bull that sired the Stewarts outstanding pair of Blacks, and from two other leading bulls, was presented to the Prince of Wales, the breeds patron, during his visit to the show ring.

Another family celebrating were the Wilsons from Cardigan. Hefin Wilson, taking over from his show-man father Jimmy, led his Holstein cow Comely Minstrel Arlene to take the breed and individual dairy interbreed championship. Arlene also contributed to the breeds win in the interbreed pairs and team of five competitions.

Meanwhile schoolboy brother Arwyns cow Glanmor Xerxes Roxy took top honours in the Jersey section. When the siblings entries met head to head for the title of top dairy cow in the show, Roxy was reserve champion. According to show historians it was the first time brothers had taken the single cow championship and reserve with different breeds.

More than 40 sheep champions paraded for judge George Scott to select his Intervet Champion of Champions. His final choice was between Arwel and June Joness North Country Cheviot ram and Stephen and Carolynne Williamss Texel ram.

The Joness take the prize home to their 3ha (8-acre) smallholding at Llanfairfechan in Gwynedd. A day later entries from their 30-ewe flock also walked away with the interbreed group of three title.

The interbreed pairs went to Tom Baileys shearling Suffolk ram from Co Meath, Ireland, and a shearling ewe from Huw Francis flock at Ruthin, Denbighshire.

The supreme pig interbreed and male championship went to S J Hulls Landrace boar Daintree Calesh 3 which earlier failed to collect either the championship or reserve in the white pig section.

Of the commercial sheep prizes a Dutch Texel x Beltex lamb shown by Gerwyn Davies of Llangadog, Carmarthenshire won the lamb carcass championship. It weighed 23.5kg and classified E3L. Runner-up was a 21.5kg Beltex x Texel lamb from David Bishop, Worcester, whose son Andrew picked up the butchers prime lamb title with the same cross.
