Nestlé latest to ban GMs

NESTLÉ has become the latest food giant to announce it is phasing out the use of genetically modified (GM) ingredients in its food.

The group, one of Britains biggest food manufacturers, is to phase out GM ingredients, including flours, oils and additives, from its British product range.

The companys move comes a day after Unilever announced its intention to remove GM organisms from its products in Britain.

Nestlé admits that it will not be able to operate a blanket ban because of the difficulties of sourcing traditional products.

It said highly refined GM ingredients in some processed products would be present for some time.

The company was unable to say when all its 250 lines would come from conventional crops, but is working with suppliers ensure it is as soon as possible.
