New DEFRA positions confirmed
DEFRA HAS announced the ministerial positions to be occupied by the new members of the junior ministerial team.
Commenting on the recent announcement secretary of state, Margeret Beckett, said:
“The ministerial team and I are looking forward to the important challenges which lie ahead in delivering the priorities set out in DEFRA’s Five Year Strategy.
“The UK’s forthcoming presidency of the EU offers new opportunities for global leadership on agriculture, climate change and environmental protection.
“With commitment and determination we will continue to work for a better environment and quality of life for everyone.”
As well as the new inclusion of Jim Knight and Lord Bach both Elliot Morley and Ben Bradshaw continue at the department.
However, Elliot Morley, the DEFRA Minister of State, sees his brief extended to include climate change.
Ben Bradshaw, junior DEFRA minister, keeps the animal health and welfare portfolio.
Lord Bach has been given responsibility for representing the government on agricultural issues in the Lords and assumes the position vacated by Lord Whitty.
Replacing Alun Michael is the South Dorset MP Jim Knight who will occupy the junior DEFRA position with responsibility for rural affairs, landscape and biodiversity.
