New hope for abattoir
FERRY Farm Foods, a subsidiary of farmers co-op North Country Primestock, has purchased the mothballed Skellingthorpe abattoir in Lincolnshire from St Merryn Meats.
The abattoir, which ceased operating in November last year because of the foot-and-mouth crisis and dwindling cattle supplies in the north of England, will begin processing cattle again today (Apr 12).
John Horncastle, managing director of Ferry Farm Foods, hopes the slaughter lines will be operating to full capacity of 535 cattle/week within one month.
Supply will be co-ordinated by North Country Primestock, with cattle grading at supermarkets carcass specification being sold to Tesco and other retailers. *
