New rules for bone meal in fertilisers

PLANS to bring the UK into line with European-wide standards governing meat and bone meal in non-agricultural fertilisers received a boost this week when MAFF announced the issue had been raised for consultation.

The proposals require meat and bone meal ingredients to be processed in accordance with Commission regulations on the processing of animal waste.

Meat and bone meal was banned from use on agricultural land last year, and can currently be used only on non-agricultural land or as a horticulture fertiliser for produce grown in glass or plastic houses.

The new legislation will primarily affect renderers and fertiliser manufacturers, who will have to make sure they comply with the changes.
