New rural recruits

SHADOW DEFRA minister Peter Ainsworth is recruiting members for a new pressure organisation, Conservative Rural Action Group, launched by the party to campaign on rural issues.

"CRAG will offer those people who want to protect and support rural Britain a platform to make a real difference," Mr Ainsworth told farmers weekly.

"The difference between CRAG and other countryside lobby groups is that it has direct links into a political party that wants to win an election," he added.

The organisation will provide a voice independent of the Conservative Party to press for policies which benefit rural people and the countryside, said Mr Ainsworth.
