New strategy unveiled for
Scottish rural development

THE Scottish Office will today unveil a new framework for rural strategy in Scotland, reports The Scotsman.

The wide-ranging review is set to outline the principles behind rural development in the future and is a direct response to a consultation exercise launched last October.

Farmers do not get a specific mention in the document.

Lord Sewel, the Scottish farm minister, is expected to emphasise the need for flexible policies adapted to rural needs, an emphasis on sustainable development and a new integrated approach at the centre of rural strategies.

The government also wants to promote partnerships among its own agencies and foster community planning.
