NFUs budget plea
NFUs budget plea
NFU leaders are urging Chancellor Gordon Brown to give farmers some tax breaks in this autumns green budget.
In a letter to Mr Brown, the union requests farmers be given relief on tax liabilities on land and buildings, so they can seek alternative income as they try to recover from foot-and-mouth.
It suggests farmers should have access to capital allowances of 100% for plant and machinery and 25% for buildings. Other measures include a freeze on fuel duty and abolishing all duty on biodiesel and other biofuels. It also proposes that Britain withdraw from the Climate Change Levy.
The letter also asks that land purchase should be free of stamp duty and that capital gains tax taper relief should be extended, so that older taxpayers can sell land without incurring liability. *
