No surprise as feed yield is down
GLYN JONES, who farms half a mile from the Welsh border near Oswestry in Shropshire, has combined 5ha (12 acres) of Intro feed barley.
It yielded 5.6t/ha (2.25t/acre). Although the farm has not grown winter barley for four years he would expect the average to be 6.8t/ha (2.75t/acre). “The yields are depressed because of difficult autumn conditions. The crop was drilled in November.”
The crop was combined at 14.5% with a specific weight 66kg/hl.
The farm is based on a light loam soil. They expect to start wheat in 10 days and oats in two weeks.
