NORTH-EAST FARM FACTS

Farm numbers There are 21,379 holdings in the north-east, Yorkshire and Humberside region. The workforce totals almost 50,000 people and includes 17,697 full-time farmers.

Land About 672,549ha (1.6m acres) of land is rented, compared with 977,707ha (2.4m acres) owned.

Arable Cereals account for 510,419ha (1.2m acres), with 23,520ha (58,117 acres) of potatoes and 667,743ha (1.6m acres) of other crops.

Grassland (excluding rough grazing) There are 573,295ha (1.4m acres) of managed grassland in the region, with 260,749ha (644,310 acres) of rough grazing.

Cattle The regions dairy herd totals 154,895 animals and the beef herd numbers 177,707.

Sheep Sheep and lambs total 4.8m, with a breeding flock of 2.2m ewes.

Pigs and poultry The herd numbers 1.7m. Poultry is under-represented compared with the rest of the country and bird numbers total just 913,928.
