NZ dairy giant has sights set on world

NEW Zealand farmers have approved the formation of a new dairy giant, which intends to waste no time climbing the global dairy ladder.

Global Co plans aggressive international expansion, beginning in Australia and South America. The aim is to put New Zealands largest company into the dairy big league of Nestlé, Dairy Farmers of America, Philip Morris-Kraft, Parmalat, Danone and Lactalis.

With a turnover of US$5bn, ninth-placed Global Co is within sight of all but Nestlé.

More than 80% of dairy farmers belonging to New Zealands two largest co-operatives, Kiwi Dairies and Dairy Group, voted recently to form Global Co, by merging the two co-ops with the NZ Dairy Board, which has enjoyed single-seller status for exporting for the past 70 years.

The NZ dairy conglomerate intends to use its 18,000-strong in-market workforce to purchase, process, brand and promote the dairy products of other countries.

Already the worlds largest dairy exporter, with 35% of internationally traded volume, Global Co aims to be a centre of excellence, underpinning the NZ economy. &#42
