Oilseed markets remain firm – HGCA

30 August 2000

Oilseed markets were generally firmer last week. Chicago soyabeans gained support from higher meal values and fund buying. This and a stronger US Dollar versus Euro/Pound, pushed EU rapeseed higher.

The winter rapeseed harvest in England is all but complete, while combining of spring rapeseed has just begun. In Scotland about 3/4 of the crop has been harvested. Early harvest results indicate above average yields and high oil contents.

The Commission confirmed that the 1m tonnes soyameal equivalent has not been exceeded for harvest 2000. No reducing coefficient will apply.

The Ministry announced consent for sowing GM herbicide tolerant winter rapeseed on 21 trial sites across England this autumn. The three-year farm scale evaluation programme will allow research of the effects GM crops might have on farm wildlife.
