Once-common birds driven off land

ONCE-COMMON farmland birds whose numbers have plummeted in recent years could soon only be found on nature reserves, warns the RSPCA.

If species such as skylarks, linnets and lapwings are to recover, the Government must encourage more wildlife friendly farming, says the bird protection charity.

RSPB conservation director Mark Avery said the charitys founders could not have foreseen that once-common birds could be in such trouble.

He was speaking at the launch of a report as part of the charitys Wake Up to Birds Week.
