One-third of kill exported

One-third of kill exported

EXPORT markets are vital, particularly when early lamb prices are poor.

At present the weak k is affecting export markets, said John Bailey, lamb production manager for Dawn Cardington. "We need about one-third of lamb kill to be exported a year to sustain markets at a viable level.

"So it is important we keep export sales open to the French market be-cause they are good payers and like our lamb."

Dawn Carding-ton livestock buyer Philip Robins ech-oed these views. "The lambs we buy have four legs, a loin, two shoulders and other joints. But for our customers this is not the case. It may be only hind legs and loin that they want to buy for a few weeks. In this case we then have to sell the rest of the carcass." This is why export markets remains so important.
