Optics double win

OPTIC spring barley has scooped the champion and runner-up awards in the Institute of Brewings 1998 National Malting Barley Competition for England and Wales.

Overall champion is Lincs farmer Dennis Weston of Willoughby Farms, Alford, whose sample of Optic was entered by Castleford maltster Thomas Fawcett & Sons and Gainsborough merchant Gleadell Banks. Runner-up is D & N Pull of Old Hunstanton, Norfolk, entered by Banks Agriculture of Sandy, Beds.

Winner of the Scottish competition will be announced in early December.
