Organic labelling

AN ORGANIC milk importer stands by the labelling of his product as containing no genetic drugs.

David Keig, sales and marketing manager for Scania Farmers UK, a wholly owned subsidiary of a Swedish dairy company acknowledges genetic drugs is being used as an all-embracing term.

The milk is on sale in Waitrose supermarkets.

"It is an attempt at a catch-all phrase." His Swedish producers have eliminated all antibiotics and hormones from their production systems and no genetically modified organisms are used, he says. Pesticides and herbicides are also shunned.

He denies the phrase could confuse consumers. There is far more muddying of the waters by firms forcing unwanted genetically modified products onto them, he maintains.

"We refuse to go that route until it is proved safe."
