Organic seed of white clover
ORGANIC producers in England and Wales have access to organically produced seed from the medium leaved white clover variety, AberDai.
Suppliers of AberDai, British Seed Houses says the variety is productive in swards grown for grazing or conservation.
The variety was bred in Britain by the Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research and is recommended for general use by NIAB. The clover is said to be a flexible variety, persisting under a wide range of management regimes, including sheep grazing and silage leys.
In IGER trials, AberDai maintained high yields of dry matter over nine years under sheep grazing, making up 40% of sward when no nitrogen was applied.
Organic producers will benefit from AberDais early growing season as it contributes to first cut silage quality and yield and also suppresses weeds, says British Seed Houses.
Seeds are available in 1kg packs, costing £12 (0117-9823691, fax 0117-9822198).
