Organics helpline takes 100 calls

SCOTLANDs organic farming helpline has received more than 100 calls in its first six months.

The Scottish Office funds the line which is manned by Scottish Agricultural College (SAC) specialists in Aberdeen.

It is dealing with an average of four inquiries a day. Staff believe there
would be more if the United Kingdom was as supportive as counties such as Sweden and Austria.

David Youniel, organic farming specialist with SAC, told the annual meeting of the North of Scotland Grassland Society, in Inverurie, how Gloucestershire farm manager John Newman, was making a comfortable living on his 647.52ha (1,600 acres) organic farm near Cirencester.
