OSRpod feed spray

A NEW pod-feeding spray for oilseed rape has been launched by Cambs-based Law Fertilisers.

It follows three seasons tissue testing in different canopy densities which highlighted competition between plants for nutrients, particularly in crops fertilised heavily early, says the firms Mark Law. "Although nitrogen is relatively cheap it can be deleterious."

Unlike in cereals, much of the yield in oilseed rape depends on growth after flowering, says Mr Law. Depending on soil conditions and solar radiation, up to two extra weeks growth can be expected before senescence by applying the new broad spectrum foliar nutrient, he says.

Cost is 60p/litre and dose 5-10 litres/ha according to growth stage and variety. "For hybrids you probably need the upper end." The product contains sulphur, the "linchpin to maturity", plus nitrogen, phosphate, manganese and magnesium to prolong photosynthesis, and boron and copper to counter stress.

Many growers already have access to high clearance sprayers to apply insecticides post flowering, he notes. Split field trials are under way to determine yield responses.
