Peach and Jazz names to note

IT WAS a good day for Peach and Jazz prefixes in Cumbria last week when the two leading cow families landed the most cash at the Holstein Summer Spectacular sale at Penrith.

Foot-and-mouth restocking cash was in direct competition with Northern Ireland breeders making a welcome return to the mainland ringside.

There were 130 cattle on offer from six herds, but it was the nine entries from the Melrose and Tonian prefixes, run under the partnership of Messrs Aconley and Woodliffe from York, that put bidders in spirited contention.

The nine members of their Jazz family levelled at £1969 and included the top call of 4200gns from Keith Pattinson, who is re-establishing his Ellengrove herd at Crosby-on-Eden, Penrith. His purchase of Melrose Formation Jazz will add a proven cow family.

This 8943kg first calver is out of Tonian Prelude Jazz RML Excellent – junior champion at the 1997 NHS – and a great-granddaughter of Meadolake TT Jazz. She was offered down calving to Mtoto.

Tonian Lee Jazz, her two-year-old in-calf full sister by Comestar Lee, drew the second highest bid selling at 3500gns to S Roan for his Kippford herd in Kircudbrightshire.

The four Peach entries from the Aconley/Woodliffe partnership averaged £2835. They all trace back to the 6200gns Bricknell Clover Mandel Peachy.

Chris Ivesons 12 Myersgarth entries from his herd at Leyburn in the Yorks Dales included six of the noted Fran family from Plushanski. They averaged £1746. Volume vendors were J Waring and Sons, Beverley, Yorks, who unloaded more than 40 cattle with the best trade for four from the Roxy family averaging £2002.

The heifer that stood second in the in-milk class at the Great Yorkshire Show earned 3000gns for owners M Rennison and Sons, York. Their Renbank Wade Fiasco goes to C Davidsons Errolston herd at Gretna.

The 30 milkers from E Kirby and Sons (Kirkham, Lancs) Medlar herd reached 2000gns for Iford Astre Doll from the famous Crudwell/Glenridge Doll family.

Averages 82 cows and calved heifers £1185; 28 served heifers £1172; and nine calves £945 (Norton & Brooksbank). &#42
