Pig employees in the firing line

THE plight of Scotlands pig farmers is the subject of a page-long feature in The Herald today.

The article is timed to coincide with the 260 redundancies expected to be announced at Aberdeenshire pig producer Arthur Simmers. Many other farmers are in a similar position, suffering from poor prices and weak demand.

Another article analyses the events which have led to the present situation with well-rehearsed concerns aired again about the strength of the pound, foreign imports, the buying power of the major multiples and the uncompetitive welfare standards demanded on British farms.
