Poor wheat yields

“WHEAT yields are diabolical,” Tony Higgins tells the harvest hotline. He farms near Langport in Somerset and has combined 120ha (300 acres) of wheat and has another 400ha (1000 acres) to go.

Claire has yielded between 4.9-6.8t/ha (2-2.75t/acre). This is about 2.5t/ha (1t/acre) below the average for the farm. He blames drought conditions during the end of May and June on the brash-soil based farm.

He says that wheat drilled in October have not done as well as January drilled wheat.
