PRESTON cattle marts future remains in doubt following a vigorous campaign by local farmers to keep the site open.
Its future has been hanging in the balance since the local council planning committee recommended that site covenants barring other use should be lifted.
The markets operators, Kendal & District Auction Mart, will now be consulted before the council makes its decision.
Councillor Harold Parker said: “we are aware of the affect our decision will have on farmers.
“We now want to meet the cattle market owners to find out more about their plans, and to see if the affect on local farmers can be minimised.
“We will then be able to make our decision based on what is the best way forward for the town and country as a whole.”
The council is said to be exploring alternatives possibly nearer to the M6 corridor.
