Prince Charles echoes deep concern at rural migration

PRINCE Charles used his inaugural speech as president of the National Federation of Young Farmers Clubs to voice concerns about the loss of young people from the countryside.

"One of the biggest threats to rural life is young people leaving the countryside in search of a more financially secure way of life," he said, addressing the NFYFCs annual conference at Blackpool last weekend by video link.

"Sometimes this is done from choice, but sometimes there is no other option. Whatever the reason, the consequences were universally bad.

"The next generation are of critical importance to the future of our precious countryside."

A retirement scheme allowing older farmers to retire "with dignity and security" would bring opportunities for youngsters, said the Prince. More "affordable housing and social facilities" were also needed.
