MILK producers should be encouraged to rear their calves for the beef trade, especially as the UK is likely to be only 60% self-sufficient in beef this year.
If producers worked together they would be able to maximise income for both the dairy and beef sectors by using an undervalued asset, said Meadow Qualitys chief executive, Peter Hambleton.
"With current changes to the suckler cow regime and a general contraction in the beef herd the UK beef industry will come to rely on dairy-bred stock more and more. With this in mind, dairy producers must start to use quality beef bulls to provide the stock the industry requires."
