Putting the zing back in breed trade

By Simon Wragg

BETTER prices at this weeks National Sheep Associations early ram sale at Builth Wells put a little sparkle back into the breeding trade with averages up between 20-45 for predominant sire lines.

From a total entry of over 860 sheep, Suffolks typified the higher level of investment with 152 MVA rams averaging 302, almost 27 better than last year. Non-MVA Suffolks were also stronger at 322, up 59.

Texels also enjoyed a better trade, averaging 288.52, up 47 on the year, and Charollais shearlings were up 10 to almost 315.

Overall, NSA officials welcomed the higher payouts as a sign that buyers perceive a brighter future.

“Prices reflect a more positive mood from commercial producers who are looking to invest in good quality sheep,” commented the associations Chris Lloyd.

Top price on the day was a level 1200gns bid given for Loosebeare Fascination from Bill Quick & Sons Texel flock based at Crediton, Devon.

Buyer was Texel judge Eiryn Morgan of Llangadog, Carmarthenshire, who also took home the top priced ewe at 410gns from BD and MEM Thomas & Sons.
