Rain stops progress into wheat
RAIN has stopped Jonathon Holland from making any worthwhile progress into wheat harvest at Hungerford, Berkshire.
They had combined some on Saturday (11 August) between showers, but now he hopes to have four combines working by 4pm on Tuesday (14 August).
“Every time we look like going we get a deluge. It hasnt given us a chance.”
He says the feed wheat crop is only just coming fit, and the crops are about eight days behind usual. He grows 2300ha (5700 acres) of wheat and 526ha (1300 acres) of beans to combine and he says they will be combining well into September.
Oilseed rape performed well on the farm. “We are pleased with the 4t/ha average. There was two thirds Apex and one third Escort.”
Two-row feed barley did not do as well, with Regina and Intro averaging between 6.2-7.4t/ha (2.5-3t/acre).
