Refugee from CAP tops turf league

A FARMER who turned to growing grass to escape the strictures of the Common Agricultural Policy has risen to the top of his league, reports The Times.
Pitches at Hampden Park in Glasgow, the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff and the grounds of Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool are laid with Stephen Fells turf.
Mr Fell, of Thorganby, south of York, says he turned to turf because he wanted his income “based on my ability to sell products” and not rely on support.
After 12 years the 640-acre farm has a turnover of 1m a year on its grass.
If Mr Fell had stayed with sheep farming he would expect less than a tenth of that, reports the newspaper.
Mr Fell is now looking to set up a network of 10 franchises to distribute the turf produced by his company Lindun Turf.
