WHEN replacing antibiotics in pig feed with enzyme additives its difficult to find the correct level of additive, particularly when its used in combination with another product.
Work at the University of Nottingham highlights that we dont yet know how best to combine enzymes and other additives for optimum pig performance, said Howard Simmins from the trials sponsor company, Finnfeeds.
"The study proved that xylanase alone, added to pig diets, can improve performance by up to 7%. And with betaine alone added, daily liveweight gains rose by up to 9%. However, when the two were combined, the results still gave a performance improvement of 9%.
"A combination of both enzymes could produce even better results, but so far we do not feel we have found the correct levels needed," added Dr Simmins . *
