Rural White Paper due in autumn

By FWi staff

THE governments Rural White Paper will be published this autumn, environment minister Michael Meacher has confirmed.

Mr Meacher made the announcement in an answer to a question in the House of Commons. Previously, it was rumoured the paper could be released this month.

Expanding his answer, Mr Meacher said the paper would be a “wide-ranging, practical and ambitious paper covering the whole range of rural services”.

It will cover “regeneration, access to services, new directions for agriculture, social exclusion, rural empowerment, conservation and recreation and rural proofing”.

The Rural White Paper is being produced jointly between the Department of the Environment and the Ministry of Agriculture.

Its aim is to pull together the different strands of rural policy. The document will outline the governments vision of the future for the countryside.
