Safeway puts its faith in veg

FRESH fruit and vegetables will be given greater emphasis as Safeway tries to recover from a 29% drop in annual profits.

New chief executive Carlos Criado-Perez want more “market-style” displays to attract shoppers to the chains 489 stores, reports The Guardian.

He has also imposed a freeze on new stores and end marketing strategies such as loyalty cards.

London stores will be refitted by October and will include new fresh produce displays.

Safeways pre-tax profits fell from 334m to 236m.
