Sainsbury family farm allowed cattle to starve

THE sister of supermarket boss Lord Sainsbury has admitted allowing cattle to starve on her farm in West Grinstead, West Sussex.
Annabel Kanabus faced charges brought yesterday by the RSCPA at Horsham magistrates court in West Sussex.
Her husband, Peter Kanabus, and his son Jason, admitted 43 charges of causing neglect and unnecessary suffering to cattle.
RSPCA inspectors found scores of emaciated cattle when they visited the familys New House Farm, in November last year. Some of the cows were in-calf and were only half their correct weight.
When the inspectors returned to the farm in February, a veterinary surgeon was called to shoot two in-calf cows lying emaciated in a field.
James Morgan-Harris, solicitor for the defence, said the BSE crisis had made it impossible for the Kanabus family to sell their cattle.
