Sainsbury’s imported ‘organic’ pork fed on meat and bonemeal
ORGANIC meat imported into Britain can come from pigs legally fed on meat and bonemeal, which is banned in Britain because of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), it has been discovered.
Pigs reared in Sweden are able to feed on animal derivatives and still be described as organic under that countrys own rules, which flout rules set for British meat.
The Daily Telegraph reports that Sainsburys has admitted its Swedish pork could come from pigs given feed banned in Britain. It denied that any of its “organic” meat was fed the diet.
The investigation into Swedish pork was launched by Sainsburys after a farmers wife near Reading in Berkshire asked her local supermarket to report on what animals ate. Sainsburys subsequently confirmed the meat and bonemeal diet.
