Satellite project launched for countryside study

ENVIRONMENT secretary Michael Meacher announced the use of satellites to show the removal of hedges, the drainage of marshes and the ploughing of meadows by farmers.

The £4 million Countryside Survey 2000 would be the most comprehensive undertaken, he said.

He told a sustainable countryside conference that the maps produced from the project would enable the Government to devise plans to save habitats, landscapes and wet places pressurised by the “undesirable effects” of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).
