School Milk Week gets started

MORE THAN 50 primary schools across England and Wales will get free milk for a day as part of School Milk Week.

The initiative, which runs from Oct 11-15, aims to illustrate how easy it is for schools to get EU subsidised milk for 5-11 year olds.

At present, although the scheme reaches 1.3 million children, nearly 90% of 5-11 year olds are not covered.

Edmund Proffitt, processing manager at the Dairy Industry Assocation, said it was an invaluable opportunity for schoolchildren to benefit from the EU subsidised scheme.

“A 189ml carton of school milk contains 13 essential nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and protein,” he said.

“It will give an ideal playtime boost to energy and concentration levels, while providing six year olds with around half of the recommended daily amount of calcium.”
