Scientists appeal against DDT ban

MORE than 370 scientists have appealed to the United Nations environment programme in Geneva not to ban the controversial pesticide DDT.

The scientists claim that a ban could cost hundreds of thousands of lives in tropical countries where DDT is used to control the mosquitoes that spread malaria.

About 110 governments will debate this week whether to ban or restrict DDT and 11 other long-lasting toxic pesticides, industrial chemicals and dioxins.
