Scientists develop safe GM tomato

SCIENTISTS have developed a genetically modified tomato that cannot transmit its altered DNA to ordinary fruit.
The development, which is written up in the latest issue of Nature Biotechnology, is a step to counter criticisms of the new technology.
The tomato has been developed so that the altered DNA is not in its pollen thus removing the possibility of cross-pollination with non-GM crops.
The work was carried out at the Institute of Plant Biochemistry and Biotechnology in Munster, Germany.
