Scientists to create GM super-pigs

SCIENTISTS have discovered how to genetically alter pigs to produce hams four times the normal size, reports The Independent.

Researchers have identified the genetic fault that causes “muscle doubling” in mammals, says the paper.

The superpig is unlikely to be produced in Britain because of public concern, but one respected source suggests that it could be produced in China.

Dr John Webb, director of science and genetics at the Cotswold Pig Development Company in Lincolnshire says China has a long tradition of pig breeding.

Dr Webb expresses concerns about the economic impact on farming in Europe if China does go ahead and develop such an animal.
