Scots beat a path to new minister

THE National Farmers Union of Scotland has asked for a meeting with Ross Finnie, the new minister for rural affairs in the Scottish assembly.

Union president Jim Walker said he would be looking to present a number of issues on behalf of milk producers.

One issue is the possibility of extending Hill Livestock Compensatory Allowance payments to dairy farmers in Less Favoured Areas.

Other subjects include generic milk advertising and measures to help farmers cut costs.

The union has also made a submission to the Department of Trade and Industry about the prices of animal medicines in the UK.

It feels there should be a referral to the Office of Fair Trading.

Mr Walker will also reiterate a long standing complaint about the strength of the pound.
