Scots feeders go store crazy

STORE cattle were in big demand from Scottish feeders desperate to buy stock for their farms at the first sale in Scotland since the trading hiatus caused by foot-and-mouth began.

The video sale, held last Friday at the Thainstone Centre, Aberdeen by the Aberdeen and Northern Marts Group, saw 2271 store cattle sold and 700 farmers turn up to buy.

Auctioneers said trade was “rip-roaring”, with store steers levelling at 128.5p/kg liveweight and heifers averaging 110.9/kg.

Alan Taylor, auctioneer for the sale, said he was delighted with the level of trading and the way buyers and sellers responded.

“Some north-eastern Scottish feeders have had no supplies for the past eight to nine weeks and were desperate to get hold of some cattle.”

Most cattle were sold in lots of 16-20, convenient for making up lorry loads, he said.

All cattle were filmed and the video footage was played to the audience to accompany in-depth descriptions of each lot in the catalogue.
