Scots hold forum on Agenda 2000
THE National Farmers Union of Scotland (NFUS) has held its first forum on the proposed reforms of the common agricultural policy (CAP).
Union president Jim Walker said the dairy settlement had been fudged and warned that arable farmers might be faced with another attempt at reform in two years time.
He said the milk industry was being left to the mercy of the strong pound, adding that the arable sector would face considerable pressure on margins.
Mr Walker said the government should declare a policy on non-food crops given the prospect that compulsory set-aside could be used to control cereal supplies.
