LIFTING of the 1997 spray-ban on Scottish set-aside has avoided major crop hygiene problems, says Keith Dawson of CSC CropCare, a vociferous protester against the ban.
"Last year resulted in a dramatic increase in weeds because of the lack of flexibility in the 1997 Scottish set-aside arrangements. It is essential that weed seeds are not allowed to build up and create problems when establishing subsequent crops. Successful and timely action now will also reduce the need for future weed control," he says.
"For most effective control farmers should spray off weeds with Roundup Biactive at full ear or flower head emergence, but before die-back or seed maturity. Timing is important to give the best agronomic and environmental benefits." *
