Scottish Office asks for ban on hive movement
THE Scottish Office asked beekeepers to adopt a ban on bee hive movements from the mainland to the islands in a bid to stop the spread of the deadly mite that has destroyed bee colonies across Europe.
The Scottish Office made its request after representation from beekeepers in Shetland, Orkney and the Inner and Outer Hebrides.
The request comes after the department banned all bee movements out of Fife and Dumfries and Galloway after cases of the mite were reported there. Beekeepers in these areas now face fines of £5000 if they fail to comply with the statutory order.
