Shamrock tops NIAB cereal challenge
By FWi staff
BREADMAKING winter wheat Shamrock has won the 2000 National Institute of Agricultural Botany Cereal Variety Challenge.
In the contest breeders strove to maximise gross margins using their own creations.
Shamrock, from Advanta Seeds, beat Eclipse from New Farm Crops and Napier from PBIC Seeds.
An 11/t premium and relatively low fungicide spend offsetting its lower yield.
A Hagberg of 230 meant it failed to get the full 13.50/t premium available, but protein at 13.4% and specific weight of 81kg/hl were well up to spec.
“We deliberated over whether to apply 40kg/ha of late N, but it clearly paid off,” says Advantas Paul Hickman.
In the 2001 challenge, Advantas XI 19 and Solstice are up against PBICs Option and Oxbow.
