Sheep tip could be worth £150
Sheep tip could be worth £150
DO YOU have a bright idea which could benefit other sheep producers and their flocks? Yes? Then enter our Topical Tips for Sheep competition.
In the run up to Sheep 98, to be held at the Three Counties showground, Malvern, Worcs, on Wed, Jul 29, farmers weekly is seeking entries for this years competition.
Your invention does not have to be brand new. Nor does it have to be big or expensive. What the judges are looking for are imaginative, practical ideas that can save time and money, reduce stress on the shepherd and flock as well as contributing to sheep welfare.
Previous successful entries include reducing risk of unidentifiable lambs by numbering ewes and placing a corresponding tag on an elastic band round lambs necks, a pen at field gates to avoid sheep escaping while driving in with feed, and a quick-release system to avoid wasting vaccine where something catches on bottle straps while dosing sheep.
Your idea may be a simple gadget or accessory, a handling facility or husbandry tip. There are two entry categories – equipment inventions and management technique tips.
Shortlisted entries will be displayed on the FW stand at the Sheep 98 event, organised by the Royal Agricultural Society of England, Three Counties Agricul-tural Society, National Sheep Association and FW.
Prizes are £150 for the winners and £50 for two runners-up in each section.
How to enter
• Describe your idea, how it works, how it came about and how it helped in flock management.
• Where appropriate, include design and construction details and estimated cost.
• Enclose a drawing, sketch or photograph.
• Closing date May 1, 1998.
