Snags for farmers at organic Iceland
I AM not an organic farmer, but I can sympathise with them over Iceland`s decision to buy organic supplies abroad (British farmers lose out on organics, FWi, 14 June, 2000).
Other countries have different standards for organic status, and many of the crops brought in would not be
classed as organic here.
Until there is an international standard set any food not meeting our standards should not be allowed to be labelled as organic.
It is the same old, old story; we set our standards high and our MAFF lets our markets be ruined by cheap, sub-standard produce, then tells us we must compete in the world marketplace.
If they won`t make them raise their standards they should lower ours so we can compete on an even footing.
