Spanish deal for lambs
Spanish deal for lambs
AS the Welsh Winter Fair opened, the first consignment of lambs was leaving a west Wales abattoir as part of a new deal with a Spanish supermarket chain.
Don Thomas, managing director of Welsh Lamb and Beef Promotions, announced the new contract to supply 4000 carcasses a week to 150 Murcat stores in Majorca and mainland Spain.
"This deal is a very encouraging start in our campaign to regain valuable export markets. We are currently working with Murcat to help them promote branded Welsh lamb," he said.
The lambs will be slaughtered at Oriel Jones and Sons Llanybydder abattoir in Carmarthenshire.
The Welsh Development Agency used the Fair to announce almost £2m in grant aid to the Welsh agri-food sector. Among the beneficiaries will be South Caernarfon Creameries, Capestone Organic Poultry at Haverfordwest, and KK Wholefoods, which processes Welsh meats, vegetables and cheeses at Flint. *
