Sprouts have own group

SPROUTS now have their own producer group, set to extol the virtues of the crop to chefs, supermarkets and the public alike.

The British Sprout Growers Association, which represents 80% of UK sprout farmers, aims to highlight the way selective breeding has produced smaller, sweeter-tasting sprouts and to encourage the crops consumption as a tasty, healthy vegetable option.

Celebrity chef and Hotel docu-soap star David Smith of Liverpools Adelphi Hotel attracted considerable interest for the vegetable when the BSGA was launched at the BBC Good Food Show, staging a cookery marathon including a variety of sprout main course and side dishes.

The UK sprout market, including exports, is currently worth £30m. But with annual consumption of just 900g a person, compared with 2kg in the Netherlands, there is plenty of room for expansion, believes the BSGA. &#42
