Spud storage research blow

POTATO storage research in the UK faces an uncertain future following the British Potato Councils termination of the Rotagrow consortiums contract to manage Sutton Bridge Experimental Unit in Lincs.

Rotagrow, which comprises SAC, ADAS and Cambridge University, has the option of buying the unit during the current three month notice period. Other approaches are also being considered by BPC.

"The council is sure that the announcement will inspire discussion of a new approach and we will be consulting the industry, particularly the NFU and SNFU," BPC chairman David Walker comments.

The move follows a difficult 15 month transition period, notes Mr Walker.

Better value for money from storage research and a clearer link to the changing structure and requirements of the industry are needed, he adds.
