St Georges Day in old East Anglia

OUR next FWC walking weekend will be in Norfolk (Apr 23-25) and we will be staying in the historic market town of Wymondham, a place of great architectural interest. We have booked rooms in the Abbey Hotel which is in a quiet backwater and as its name suggests, is near to the old abbey.

On Friday evening, which is St Georges Day, you will be welcomed with a hearty dinner of good old English roast beef. We will then spend the rest of the weekend walking it off! Saturday mornings walk will be a guided tour of the town to familiarise us with our surroundings and study the wide diversity of style of building since the towns first charter of 1139. Well stop at one of the many hostelries for lunch before going further afield. In the afternoon we will be doing a circular walk covering about five miles of the surrounding Norfolk countryside.

We will be back to the comfort of the hotel for an evenings relaxation – a chance to put our feet up in the company of friends old and new from the Farm Womens Club. Dinner will be served in the intimate dining room and it is hoped that some of the local members may come and join us.

By Sunday you will be either raring to go for another hike or you may want to take things more easily with a visit to one of the numerous local att-ractions by car.

Wymondham

Abbeys morning

services are at

8am and 11am

after which we

will embark

upon more

exploration of

this enchanting

area of East

Anglia. The

Otter Trust at

Earsham has

beautiful

riverside

walks with

three

lakes and a large collection of otters and European wildfowl. There is also a very pleasant tea room for refreshments. Norwich, with its spired cathedral, is only nine miles away from Wymondham, and if you decide to visit any of the Broadland villages you will be fascinated by their colourful, individual signs and light, spacious churches.
